Remastering Process for
HospitalityMachine
For those who
are interested, I tried remastering various Linux distros.
-
I tried remastering
Morphix (a.k.a. 'Morphing Morphix'),
with the included remastering tools. They are still very much in Beta
stage and I had little success.
-
I tried
DreamLinux, which is meant to be a refinement of Morphing Morphix. Still
no success. Both of these projects have laudable goals, and make fine
operating systems, but their remastering tools aren't reliable - yet.
-
RPath Linux
was needlessly complicated, using an extra layer of tools (virtual
appliance, appliance builders, etc), and local repositories that only
serve to hinder.
-
Puppy Linux. I had some success
with this but the resulting OS was never as 'custom' as I would have
liked. And the hard disk install was unnecessarily complicated - a
sure way to put off new users to Linux, whom I am
trying to attract.
-
Knoppix. I had
more luck manually remastering Knoppix and would have continued with
this if I hadn't stumbled upon PCLinuxOS.
-
PCLinuxOS -
Perfect!
Remastering Process for
HospitalityMachineKiosk
-
Version
1.0 is a slight modification of KioskCD. It isn't a true remaster.
-
Version
1.2 is a slight modification of BoothCD/BoothBox. It too isn't a
true remaster.
-
Version
2.0 IS a true remaster. It is based on PCLinuxOS. Due to my
remastering this version personally I chose an existing distro that
had excellent hardware detection, and included the latest versions
of Firefox, Flash, Java, and I also included various media players (Mplayer,
Gxine), and I modified the desktop to have a volume control and a
chat application (v2.0A)
